Exercise Can Help

Besides making healthy choices in your diet, men being treated for prostate cancer should start an exercise routine.55 Resistance exercise can help reduce symptoms of fatigue related to prostate cancer treatment.57 Resistance exercise also strengthens muscles that may have become weakened with hormone treatments.55 Before starting any exercise program, always talk with your doctor to make sure your program is safe for your physical condition.57

Do what you enjoy

Generally, you should exercise enough to achieve or maintain a healthy weight. A good way to get started is to find exercises or activities that you enjoy, such as55,58:

  • Walking
  • Swimming
  • Riding a bicycle
  • Dancing

The important thing is to stay active and keep moving, without overdoing it. A good rule is to exercise enough so you breathe hard but are still able to carry on a conversation.58

Lift weights

Weight lifting can help lower the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It also strengthens your muscles, which can help you burn calories.55

Regular weight lifting (for example 3 days a week)—with a day off between weight-lifting days—is one way to add strength training to your exercise routine.55 With that in mind, the following table features examples of weight-lifting exercises that you may consider adding to your exercise routine. Be sure to talk with your doctor about which weight-lifting exercises may be appropriate for you.

Exercising for as little as 30 minutes a day can help improve your health.58 You may even be able to reduce some of the side effects related to prostate cancer treatments by being physically active.55
